MAMA stands for Mnet Asian Music Awards. Its a huge event that happens every year. As the name implies, its purpose is to recognize artists from the Music industry. With the name/title that has ‘Asian’ in it, you’d automatically think it’s an event for ASIAN ARTISTS. True, this event caters to many Asian countries. After all, it is shown almost all over Asia, especially this year. Plus, thousands, if not millions, of Asians anticipate this show every year. Add the fact that the program includes some performers from different Asian countries. But wait, don’t assume just yet. You see, MAMA is an award-giving body that is produced by Korea for KOREAN artists. Korea is an Asian country. But alone is not Asia. Now what’s with the name/title, right? I have nothing against MAMA, except this (or maybe, plus some questions regarding some of this years winners.. Haha..) I am openly a fan girl, so it’s not like I’m questioning this because I’m not into K-pop/rock music. But really, I just can’t figure out why it’s allowed to keep this name/title. Oh, and I almost forgot, it’s also referred to as the biggest Asian music awards. Uhhh, hi? Philippines here. Asian country. And not a single artist from this country or from any other Asian country is part of the event as a nominee. It may be a huge event. And may also involve a variety or type of music, from pop to hiphop to rock to ballad to whatever. But it’s not a variety of Asian countries’ music. I suggest they rename it to Mnet Music Awards since Mnet’s a South Korean entertainment company. Or for a more specific feel, Mnet South Korean Music Awards. Why not? It seems legit, right?
